From the tough streets of Chicago to magical lands, Regina’s Globe Theatre will be featuring a wide variety of plays during its 2019-20 season.
The theatre announced six plays for the upcoming season on Thursday.
Chicago (Sept. 11 to Oct. 6)
This hit musical is based on real-life murders and is set in 1920s Chicago. It follows Roxie Hart, a housewife and singer who killed her lover. With the help of Chicago’s best criminal lawyer, she desperately tries to keep herself off death row.
Cinderella (Nov. 27 to Dec. 22)
A re-telling of a classic fairy tale, Cinderella is an evening for all ages to enjoy.
After losing her mother, Cinderella is forced to live with her evil stepmother and stepsisters. Thanks to the spirit of her mother, and the help of some animal friends, she attends the royal ball and gets a chance to live her own adventure.
Exit, Pursued by a Bear (Jan. 22 to Feb. 9)
After years of domestic violence at the hands of her deer-poaching, beer-drinking husband, Nan Carter is fed up. This dark revenge comedy set in Georgia has Nan hatch a plan to teach her abuser a lesson.
I Call Myself Princess (March 4 to March 22)
When William, a Métis music student, is handed the 1918 opera Shanewis, he begins to learn about the complex circumstances faced by indigenous performers past and present.
Combining humour, drama, biography and contemporary opera, it explores the tension between representation, inspiration and cultural appropriation.
The Boy in the Moon (April 8 to April 26)
Based on the memoir by journalist Ian Brown, this is the true story of a family’s journey to raise their son who suffers from an extremely rare genetic disorder.
Billy Elliot The Musical (May 26 to June 21)
Featuring music by Elton John, this inspirational tale takes place in a depressed English mining town and tells of a young boy’s struggle to follow his heart. Billy wants to trade in his boxing gloves for ballet shoes as he discovers an extraordinary gift of dance.
