Observant drivers may have noticed something missing on south Ring Road over the past couple of months — the photo radar box.
SGI said a vehicle slid off the road during the holiday season and damaged both the box and the power pole. One camera rotates between the five Ring Road photo radar locations, and it wasn’t in this box at the time of the crash.
The crash was deemed unintentional, so SGI isn’t considering it an act of vandalism.
It could be a little while until a new box is put up and photo radar can operate at that location again. SGI said there is an insurance claim related to the incident and it’s expected a new box won’t be put up until that is dealt with, and until the weather warms up a bit.
Because the camera is still moving between the other locations on Ring Road, there isn’t expected to be any lost revenue from this.
The provincial government has said the photo radar program is intended to make these areas safer. SGI said it isn’t expecting any significant issues in that specific area because photo radar is still operating in the other locations, there are signs up reminding people of that, and police officers are still out doing their own speed enforcement.
