Hopefully CFL bigwigs have noticed what’s going on with their NFL counterparts the past few days.
Lots. Lots has been going on. Big contracts for Foles, Mosley and Thomas. Trades for Brown and Beckham. That’s because the NFL encourages activity surrounding player moves and free-agent signings. Two days before NFL players become free agents, a window opens and rival teams are allowed to conduct preliminary contract discussions with the players’ representatives. Truth be told, those discussions take place weeks in advance, but at least the NFL admits there may be contact beforehand.
The CFL, however, demands that no potential free agents, nor their agents, can talk to any other team before their contract expires. That proves to be a joke when CFL teams announce they have signed somebody mere hours after the free-agent deadline. Everyone knows it’s going on but nobody admits it. There aren’t many NFL rules that should be adopted by the CFL, but the free-agency window is one of them.
