About 250 people gathered at the steps of the Saskatchewan Legislature on Friday, calling for action on climate change.
Most were students, walking out of class for the “school strike,” one of more than 2,000 of them happening in 123 countries worldwide.
The rallies were inspired by a 16-year-old activist from Sweden named Greta Thunberg, who started skipping school on Fridays to protest climate change.
In Regina, one student named Tasleigh said more needs to be done to find alternative energy sources to coal.
“I’ve been in a few environmental science classes and I’ve learned a lot. It’s kind of disappointing to see we’re not doing much about the environment,” she said.
The demonstration also included parents. Kristen Martin brought her six year olds along.
“We know that it is critical that we act now and we need to make some changes so we can stop climate change from happening,” Martin said.
“The environment and being outside in nature is a big part of our lives. They’re growing up understanding these issues and I think it’s important that we encourage kids and let them know that they’re never too young to take a stand in what they believe in.”
