Now that it’s getting warmer, you might be wondering if a certain nuisance will start appearing in your home.
That would be maple bugs, also known as boxelder bugs.
Shawn Sherwood from Poulin’s Pest Control said the bugs winter in attics and in between people’s walls.
They’re annoying but harmless and you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them, he said, adding his company hasn’t fielded a single call about the bugs yet.
“Periodically during the winter when you get a warmer day, you get them flying around in your house. If you squish one on the wall, it leaves a red stain (that) you get a hell of a time getting off,” Sherwood said.
“They’re a nuisance. They’re not really going to cause a whole lot of problems. Once they come out of their hiding areas in the spring, they’re pretty much headed for the trees because they need to get that reproductive cycle going.”
Sherwood said the way to deal with maple bugs is to prevent them from entering your home in the first place. He said the company’s method is to powder the gap between a home’s foundation and ground, as well as powdering underneath the siding.
