Steve Yzerman spent eight years putting together the Tampa Bay Lightning. When he got it right, he left.
Six months after Yzerman resigned as GM, Tampa clinched first place in the NHL, earned the frivolous President’s Trophy and is the odds-on favourite to win the Stanley Cup. Yzerman has returned to Michigan to be with his family, but he remains a Lightning advisor and — make no mistake — he’s the architect of the NHL’s best team.
Yzerman won three Stanley Cups during his 22-year, Hall of Fame career playing for the Detroit Red Wings. He added one Cup as Detroit’s operations VP before joining Tampa. Twice he built Olympic-winning teams for Hockey Canada. His Lightning advanced to one Stanley Cup, losing in 2015 to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Yzerman surrounded superstar Steve Stamkos with an amazing cast that includes Nikita Kucherov, Victor Hedman and Brayden Point. If they lift the Cup in June, they’d better skate around, find Yzerman and hand it to him.
