Evraz was handed a six-figure fine this week after pleading guilty to a breach of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
The company was fined $71,429 with a $28,571 surcharge for an incident that occurred Feb. 15, 2017 at the company’s Regina plant. According to a media release from the provincial government, a worker ruptured a quadriceps tendon while stepping down into a pit.
Appearing in Regina Provincial Court on Tuesday, Evraz pleaded guilty to what the government release said was failing to “provide and maintain a safe means of entrance to and exit from a place of employment and all worksites and work-related areas in or on a place of employment, resulting in a serious injury to a worker.”
The release noted that, under The Saskatchewan Employment Act, a corporation can be fined a maximum of $1.5 million if it’s convicted of an offence that causes the serious injury or death of a worker.
