Four students from Rosemont Community School in Regina are going on a trip of a lifetime.
On Thursday afternoon, the Grade 5 and 6 students learned they were selected to go on a one-day, whirlwind vacation to Disney World from Dreams Take Flight, a charity that donates trips to kids who may face health or social challenges.
Principal Hillary Ibbott Neiszner said it’s been in the works with the children’s parents since last fall.
“There were a lot of fears and a lot of anxiety leading up to this moment, so I’m really just so happy that it turned out and the kids are going to get this experience,” she said, adding it was difficult to keep the secret.
Next month’s Disney trip is the prize to go along with each student’s kindness award, which Ibbott Neiszner said showcases their “quiet leadership” skills.
Grade 5 student Araceli Tontrereras was speechless when she and her classmates were called to the front of the gymnasium during a surprise assembly.
“I don’t have any words for it,” she said with a smile. “I thought we were going to do some sort of challenge or game, but we’re going to Disney.”
That excitement was echoed by Grade 5 student Sage Crowe, who said it pays off to be nice.
“Be kind, have a smile on your face,” he encouraged his fellow classmates. “If you just respect people, this could all happen.”
