Saskatchewan residents no longer have to specify their genders on their driver’s licences and photo ID cards.
In a media release Monday, SGI announced that residents who don’t identify as male or female can choose to put a gender-neutral X in the sex designation field on their licences or ID cards.
“SGI is committed to inclusiveness,” Penny McCune, the chief operating officer of the Auto Fund, said in the release. “We recognize that some of our customers wish to refrain from identifying as either female or male or any gender at all on their identification.
“Customers now have the flexibility to designate their sex on their ID with an F or M, or choose a non-gendered option by indicating X.”
In May of 2018, the Saskatchewan Court of Queen’s Bench ruled that the provincial government had to allow people to remove their gender from their birth certificates. The move announced Monday brings SGI in line with that decision.
Alberta, Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador already offer their residents the option not to specify a gender on their licences.
SGI customers who want to change their licences or photo IDs can do so at any authorized licence issuer in the province. There isn’t any charge, nor is any documentation required.
