The Toronto Blue Jays will only be able to attract the most loyal of baseball fans in these parts this season. Once the Saskatchewan Roughriders start training camp in May, the rebuilding Blue Jays will be on the back burner for sports lovers in this province.
Having said that, there was a moment in Thursday’s season-opener I’m glad I didn’t miss. The introduction of 53-year-old manager Charlie Montoyo provided a great moment.
There aren’t many people in professional sports who achieve new heights after 50 years old. One could tell that Montoyo, who many people don’t know a lot about, was humbled and thankful for the opportunity to manage a major-league team for the first time.
At first blush, he appears to be good with the fans, good with the media and looks as if he will be good for a Blue Jays team that has a long 2019 season ahead.
The 2019 season will be a grind, but their manager makes being patient a whole lot easier.
