Jamie Nye: Guiding a team to greatness isn’t always pretty

Tom Izzo was the face of everything wrong in the NCAA earlier in the tournament.

The head coach of the Michigan State men’s basketball team snapped in the first game of the tournament on one of his freshman players.

Izzo was the symbol of a millionaire coach screaming at an unpaid teenager. Izzo defended himself well, saying all he was doing was trying to get the best out of a player who was dogging it on defence.

The veteran, old-school coach didn’t see anything wrong with yelling at his players, and the criticism was a sign of the times where we are a little too soft.

Today, Michigan State is planning its travel and accommodation for the Final Four after beating the best team in the country, Duke, on Sunday.

Izzo saw that his team in the first game needed a wake-up call, and a freshman bore the brunt.

Now the Spartans are two wins from a national championship as Izzo is now the face of great coaches who know what their team needs, when they need it and yes, it may involve screaming at them.
