Logan Boulet’s impact on and off the ice is being feted by the City of Lethbridge.
In a media release Monday, Lethbridge announced that city council has unanimously approved a proposal to change the name of the city’s Adams Park Ice Centre to Logan Boulet Arena.
Boulet, a product of the Alberta city, was among the 16 people killed April 6 in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. The 21-year-old Boulet was a defenceman with the SJHL team.
The Logan Boulet Effect has become famous as well. His decision to become an organ donor saved the lives of six people in the wake of the crash and prompted a reported 100,000 people to follow his lead.
“Logan is someone who will be remembered and should be remembered as a remarkable young man,” Lethbridge Coun. Blaine Hyggen said in the media release. “His compassion and dedication to both hockey and to wanting to make the world a better place is contagious. It is my absolute pleasure to bring this resolution forward.”
“It is such an easy decision to support a name change to Logan Boulet Arena,” added Mayor Chris Spearman. “I feel honoured to say that Logan is a hero and should be recognized as such. Logan’s legacy should reside in part in his hometown rink.”
The name change is to take effect prior to the 2019-20 hockey season. In addition to renaming the rink, the city also is asking its Arts Committee to look into commissioning a piece of art in Boulet’s memory.
Boulet is the second Broncos player in a little more than two weeks to have a rink renamed in his honour. On March 16, the town of Allan paid tribute to former Humboldt captain Logan Schatz, who also died in the crash.
