Nipsey Hussle? Never heard of him before Monday.
Nipsey Russell? Sure. Comedian, dancer. Used to watch him on TV game shows like Hollywood Squares. Before dying in 2005, Russell evidently impressed a young gang member, rapper and song writer from Los Angeles enough to assume his sound-alike nickname.
The rapper was shot dead Sunday in a gang-style execution in front of his L.A. store. Just another gang-related murder, it seems, until you see the reaction his death elicited from NBA superstars Steph Curry and LeBron James, among others. Nipsey Hussle was going to meet with L.A. police to discuss dealing with gang violence. He was using his fame and fortune to help give opportunities, clothing, uniforms and housing to inner-city children. During interviews, Nipsey Hussle admitted he could never leave his gang, but he could rise above it. Steph and LeBron, two athletes who care about their communities, are sad that he couldn’t.
