I had a terrific chat with Prince Albert Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid on Tuesday on his memories of the Saskatoon-Prince Albert hockey rivalry.
As the two teams prepare to meet in the 2019 WHL playoffs, his mind went back to the J’s-Raiders games of the SJHL in the 1970s and 1980s. Terry Simpson coached a powerhouse in P.A. for many years.
I have a great fondness for such discussions when it comes to junior hockey in Saskatchewan. I can remember Swift Current’s 1989 win over Saskatoon in the Memorial Cup like it was yesterday. Tim Tisdale broke the hearts of the Blades faithful that year. Tisdale and Sheldon Kennedy played on a Broncos team that was tough to beat.
The Warriors and Pats once had a rivalry that at times came close to going beyond the ice and into the parking lot.
In 2019, it’s the Raiders and Blades that get their chance to meet, head on, in a very meaningful series that may generate the same sort of memories. I can’t wait.
