Eileen was not happy. (Eileen is my 96-year-old mom.)
I phoned to inform her that the Jays had traded outfielder Kevin Pillar to the San Francisco Giants. She said something like, “I can’t help them if they are going to do things like that.” The exact quote was tough to decipher through the rage. Eileen is still a Blue Jays fan, but likely under protest for the next week or so.
This trade just confirms something that we already knew. This team is rebuilding. There is a new manager, a new $52-million man in Randal Grichuk, and a new vision which will require patience from this fan base. Some high 70- or low 80-win seasons may be the norm for the foreseeable future.
The ties to the 2015 and 2016 Blue Jay teams that appeared in back-to-back American League championship series are getting to be less and less. It’ll be a tough pill to swallow for the next season or two.
If you’re not sure of that, just ask Eileen.
