The first time I saw Jon Ryan play football live, we were both students at the University of Regina.
He was everywhere. He was catching passes and kicking the leather off the football.
He was drafted by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, for whom he was outstanding until the NFL inevitably witnessed the power of his leg and the Green Bay Packers gave him a gig.
The Packers made the mistake of moving on from Ryan, who quickly emerged as a top NFL punter with the Seattle Seahawks, with whom he won a Super Bowl.
And after all that, Jon Ryan requested a workout with the Saskatchewan Roughriders rather than just rely on his 14-year pro career resume.
Ryan doesn’t want a job because he’s Jon Ryan, NFL punter. He wants to earn it.
Whether he finishes his career in Regina, where it all started, we don’t know. But it certainly would be the ultimate story of a career coming full circle.
