There’s still a week and a half to go, but police services around the province have seen 133 firearms surrendered since the start of their gun amnesty on March 25.
This is the second year the province’s police services have run the amnesty, which will continue through April 19.
The preliminary numbers include guns surrendered to six different police forces.
- RCMP: 48 firearms
- Saskatoon Police Service: 30 firearms
- Moose Jaw Police Service: 24 firearms
- Dalmeny Police Service: 3 firearms
- Weyburn Police Service: 3 firearms
- Regina Police Service 25 firearms.
In total, across all forces, 16 restricted guns were seized and six that are considered “prohibited by design.” One gun surrendered in Saskatoon had been sawed off.
People wishing to turn in their firearms should call their local police service or RCMP detachment to arrange it. Police do not want members of the public transporting firearms to detachments; instead, officers will arrange to pick up the firearms.
