The Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is confirming the 64-year-old woman who died after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Lewvan Drive early Friday was a resident at Regina Pioneer Village.
“The SHA extends our condolences to her family, and offers our assistance and support,” the health authority wrote in an emailed statement to 980 CJME Friday afternoon. “Pioneer Village is reaching out to the resident’s identified family to offer support in this difficult situation. Staff at the facility are also being offered emotional support and assistance as needed.”
According to the Regina Police Service (RPS), officers responded to the vehicle-pedestrian collision at 12:15 a.m. Paramedics took the injured woman to hospital, where she died at 11:15 a.m.
The SHA noted in its statement that security from Pioneer Village were also on scene shortly after the incident.
The health authority wouldn’t speak to this specific case, but did mention many residents are able to decide whether they want to leave the facility on their own.
“As part of the care-planning and supported decision-making process, we work with individuals and their families to support an understanding of their wishes. This includes discussion on informed decision-making and identification and understanding of risk,” the SHA said. “When leaving the building, residents are asked to inform staff they are leaving and anticipated return time.”
The SHA also noted that management at Pioneer Village is working with SHA Patient Safety to review the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Meanwhile, Regina police are still investigating and have not laid any charges.
Anyone with information is asked to call the RPS at 306-777-6500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
