It’s a trip that’s at the top of many golfers’ bucket lists — and one Regina woman is completing it for the second time.
The Masters is one of the premier events on the PGA Tour, with golf’s best vying for a chance to add a green jacket to their wardrobe.
Michelle Kimmery is at the tournament for a second time, after first making the trip five years ago.
“It’s amazing. If you are a golfer or even a golf fan, it is the ultimate experience in golf,” Kimmery told the 980 CJME Greg Morgan Morning Show on Friday.
She said being on the course is quite an experience, noting the television cameras don’t do it justice in terms of its elevation changes and undulations.
“The golf course is like nothing I’ve ever seen before,” she said of Augusta National. “It is immaculate.”
She also said the fans — otherwise known as “patrons” — are very polite.
“There’s no yelling, there’s no running,” she said. “There’s lots of cheering but it’s very old school.
“There’s nobody holding up signs to tell everybody to be quiet because everybody knows when they’re supposed to be quiet and everybody knows when they’re supposed to cheer. It’s pretty neat.”
She said it’s a good strategy to go early and set up chairs so you can get a spot on the course.
While she was able to follow Canadian Corey Conners in the tournament’s early stages, it would be a different story to follow a golfer like Tiger Woods.
“Once the full crowd is there, I would say it’s difficult if you want to see anything,” Kimmery said.
People at the tournament are not allowed to bring cellphones or cameras with them to get photos of the golfers out on the course — but that might not be the worst thing.
“You really get into the moment, into the experience,” Kimmery said. “You’re not worrying about catching it for Facebook or Instagram or whatever. You’re just about being there and watching it and the players and the course.”
And how can a person get a chance to live out their golfing dream vacation? Kimmery said people can win a lottery for tickets but travel agents also offer packages that include admission to the tournament.
