We’re a day late on this because everyone was talking about Tiger Woods, but did you see the botched video review that robbed Finland of its rightful victory as women’s world hockey champion?
Finland scored a game-winning goal in sudden-death overtime. The hometown crowd went crazy as the players tossed their sticks and gloves in jubilation. But the losing team, the U.S.A., believed a Finnish player had interfered with its goalie. An on-ice referee was actually calling a tripping penalty against the American goalie. Instead, the play went to video review.
About 10 minutes later, a referee emerged from the penalty box and waved a no-goal signal. Finland collected its gear. And lost in a shootout.
Every other world championship has featured a U.S.-Canada matchup for the gold medal. Finland eliminated Canada in a semifinal and legitimately defeated the Americans, until video review took it away. It’s a good reminder to hockey and every other sport that video review is ruining: Scrap it!
