I’m lucky enough to play a very small part on a host committee for the 2019 Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame induction dinner.
Last year, the event was held in Swift Current. This year’s dinner is July 6 in Saskatoon. In 2020, Yorkton will host this prestigious event.
One of this year’s inductees is Curtis Leschyshyn. He played his minor and junior hockey in Saskatchewan before being drafted third overall into the NHL. From there, he played for 20 years and won a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche.
On Thursday, Leschyshyn was still trying get his head around being a “Hall of Famer.” Some of his fondest memories were playing minor hockey for Joe Bloski and for former Blades co-owner Jack Brodsky, both of whom will also be inducted for their part in Saskatchewan hockey.
This year, six former NHLers who combined for 10 Stanley Cup championships will be recognized along with builders, officials and grassroots contributors who helped many players along the way.
When it comes to hockey, there is something special about how this province takes pride in its people no matter their role.
