My co-author is having a great playoff season for the New York Islanders. So are some of the other Saskatchewanians I spoke with for my book called “Fire on Ice: Why Saskatchewan Rules the NHL” — Jaden Schwartz, Brayden Schenn and Tyler Bozak.
Jordan Eberle wrote the book’s introduction, recalling the Regina neighbourhood we shared when he was growing up to become one of 28 Saskatchewan-born NHL players this season.
No other jurisdiction produces as many NHL players per capita as Saskatchewan. They told me the work ethic, appreciation for others who helped them and their desire to represent themselves proudly contributed to making them pro hockey players.
Eberle scored once in each playoff game as his Islanders swept the Pittsburgh Penguins. Schwartz’s hat trick, while occasionally playing with teammates Schenn and Bozak, helped the St. Louis Blues eliminate the Winnipeg Jets. Schwartz is from Wilcox, Bozak from Regina and Schenn from Saskatoon.
“Fire on Ice” is six years old, but its credo still rings true. And what the heck? Maybe the book will start selling again.
