OK, I get it! The Toronto Maple Leafs will not be embraced as Canada’s team.
After the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets dropped out of the playoffs, I dared tweet that the Leafs were now ‘Canada’s Team.’
Oops.
Although I made the tweet with tongue in cheek, fans — mostly with Leaf logos in their profile photo — said of course the Leafs are or said things that I cannot possibly repeat on the radio.
Yes, the Leafs are either loved or hated and they won’t exactly be sparking fans to be jumping on board just to have the Stanley Cup come north of the border.
I personally find the notion that you cheer for the last Canadian team standing a little silly. Being a fan of another Canadian team, you grow to despise the other six. Why all of a sudden should we jump on board a rival?
Plus, I know a few Bruins fans who are not going to care if Canada’s cup drought grows to 27 years.
So pick your team, pick your story, and remember that if the Leafs do win, at least we’d see Saskatchewan’s Patrick Marleau win his first cup.
