The replay debate is alive and well following the Las Vegas Golden Knights’ Game 7 Stanley Cup playoff loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
The Sharks scored four goals during a five-minute, third-period power play. Cody Eakin was called for a cross-check that appeared to go across Joe Pavelski’s body and not his head.
After the game an understandably frustrated Jonathan Marchessault of the Knights wondered why the officials didn’t look at a replay. He also alluded to the NFC championship game where a blown call, in all likelihood, cost the New Orleans Saints a trip to the Super Bowl.
While I believe this was a blown call, there isn’t a perfect solution to this in hockey, or any sport. With HD and 4K, officiating mistakes are going to be visible for all to see. Every league is trying to find that balance of empowering officials while keeping games moving and getting calls right.
The conversation of how far to go down the video review trail in professional sports is raging today, just like it was after the NFC championship game. It will again in the future.
