If hockey fans didn’t get a pre-sale code for the Heritage Classic, Thursday was the day they could get their hands on some tickets.
The NHL game is to be played outdoors at Mosaic Stadium on Oct. 26 and is to feature playoff contenders in the Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames.
A few people took the chance to go to the Brandt Centre box office Thursday when tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. to ensure they got the spots they wanted.
Ellen Zylack was excited to get her family a set of tickets.
“The seats are kind of high but it will be a good game,” she said. “I’m maybe not excited about the weather, but I’ve been to (Saskatchewan Roughriders) games in cold weather so it should be OK.”
She said there would be a bit of sibling bragging rights on the line during the game; she’s a Jets fan while her brother cheers for the Flames.
Mike Spurgeon was another eager hockey fan excited to pick up his tickets to the big game.
“I think it’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” he said. “I’ve been to NHL games, but not one of these Winter Classics where it’s outdoor in a football complex.”
As a longtime Riders fan, Spurgeon knew big things were on the way when the new Mosaic Stadium went up in 2017.
“Once the new stadium got built, I knew it was just a matter of time,” Spurgeon said.
His Rider fandom is also going to determine why he’s cheering on Winnipeg.
“(I have) a dislike of Calgary more through football than hockey,” he said.
Tickets range from $125 to more than $400.
