A fourth division winner from the NHL’s regular season — the defending Stanley Cup-champion Washington Capitals — was bounced from the Stanley Cup playoffs on Wednesday night at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes.
While Carolina’s win was unexpected, I wouldn’t throw it into the category of upset. Having said that, I was among the many who thought the Capitals would win Game 7.
To many hockey fans in North America, the Hurricanes became famous for their post-game celebrations and weren’t properly recognized for their play. Some forget that the Hurricanes finished just five points back of Washington in the regular-season standings.
Now, in Round 2, Carolina faces a New York Islanders team that finished just four points ahead of Carolina in the Metropolitan Division standings. New York has a very good team with a coach that led his club to the Stanley Cup final one year ago.
However, if the Hurricanes win this series over the Islanders, remember what we witnessed on Wednesday. Carolina could easily make that happen again.
