This week, Saskatchewan is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Roughriders’ 43-40 victory over Hamilton in the 1989 Grey Cup.
Dave Ridgway, Bobby Jurasin and Ray Elgaard were to meet the media in Regina on Tuesday. On Thursday, they will be joined by the Green Zone’s Glen Suitor at the Dogs’ Breakfast in Saskatoon.
The story of “The Kick” has been well-documented. However, those of us of a certain age remember Jeff Fairholm’s 75-yard touchdown dash in the second quarter to cut into Hamilton’s lead. On a third-and-eight play in the final minute of the fourth quarter, Tiger-Cats receiver Tony Champion, with injured ribs, made an unbelievable touchdown catch to tie the game.
Without a two-sack effort from defensive lineman Chuck Klingbeil in the contest, the Riders may not have won the game.
In the grand scheme of things, it may seem strange to celebrate the second of four Grey Cup championships for the Roughriders franchise. For those of you not of a certain age, go online and watch it. I think you’ll agree: It was a classic and is worth celebrating.
*Note: This story has been updated. A previous version said quarterback Tom Burgess would be attending the Dog’s Breakfast in Saskatoon. Regrettably, Mr. Burgess will be unable to attend.
