It is by far and away my favourite time of the year. Why? Because this is when Saskatchewan sports fans get fired up. From now to Christmas, it is football season.
The CFL draft is set for tonight, and that gets Rider Nation talking — not only about who should be taken in the draft, but about what the team will look like in 2019. This year is like every other year. Quarterback talk dominates the discussion. Will Zach Collaros and an inexperienced bunch of backups be enough?
These are the conversations that dominated at the annual Dogs’ Breakfast in Saskatoon. About 1,500 people paid top dollar to not only hear from members of the 1989 Grey Cup-winning Riders team but support the U of S program as the Huskies compete in the competitive market of recruitment. The Rams, Thunder, Hilltops, women’s teams, and 12-man, nine-man and six-man high school programs are all gearing up.
This is nothing new. It’s how we roll here. But it’s always special.
