Students are going to have to keep digging deeper into their wallets as tuition and fees are set to go up at the University of Regina.
The university’s board of governors approved the $230-million operating budget on Tuesday. It includes a 2.8-per-cent hike to most tuition and fees — the same increase implemented in the 2018-19 budget.
That will mean an almost $200-per-year increase from the winter 2019 fees for a Canadian undergraduate arts student taking a full load of classes. The arts faculty, on average, has the lowest tuition and fees at the university.
According to the university’s calculations, its tuition packages are cheaper than the average of 59 Canadian English-language schools.
In a release from the university, the chair of the board of governors praised the balanced budget.
“The University of Regina is marking its 25th consecutive year of presenting a balanced operating budget which is a testament to the University’s record of responsible, financial stewardship,” said Cathy Warner.
The university said it’s adding faculty and academic support positions in areas of growth, like the faculties of nursing, science and continuing education. The faculty of kinesiology got an extra $76,050 to hire graduate students in academic support positions. The faculties of science and engineering both got $200,000 for teaching equipment provisions.
The university also said it needed to make adjustments in the budget to make up for cost increases.
