It has been a tough few days, physically and emotionally, for Aries Key Anderson.
“I didn’t know what to feel. I was hurt, angry, shocked that someone would steal my walker because I use that thing daily,” said Key Anderson, a 20-year-old from Regina.
He has cerebral palsy, which weakens the muscles and makes it difficult for him to get around. He requires a walker.
On Sunday evening, he and his aunt were in front of her house with the walker. They went inside and when they came back out on Monday morning, the walker was gone — someone had stolen it.
“I searched the whole house just in case the boys put it somewhere else. No, we couldn’t find it,” said his aunt, Candace Macauley.
Key Anderson wasn’t only hurt by the action, but not having the walker creates a whole host of problems.
“When I don’t have it, I have limited mobility. I can’t go (to) far places, I can only go places that are short distances (and) I constantly fall. I get sore very, very fast. I get exhausted more and more easily,” explained Key Anderson.
He started slowly but didn’t mince words when asked what he would say to the thieves.
“I hope you’re happy. It’s very low of you to steal from someone with a disability … I’m hurt by whoever did this, and that’s all I can say is I hope you’re happy, just knowing that you did that to someone,” said Key Anderson.
Macauley said they’re very grateful because a walker has been donated for now, but it doesn’t quite meet Key Anderson’s abilities and puts stress on his joints.
So, she started a GoFundMe page. The goal is $500, which is about the cost of getting a new walker.
As of noon on Wednesday, the campaign had hit $350. Macauley said once they get to $500 and can get the walker, they’ll start posting pictures of Key Anderson with his new walker for all those who donated.
