Curling fans in Melville have a chance to make a double in January.
CurlSask announced at a media conference Wednesday that the 2020 Viterra Scotties women’s provincial championship and the 2020 SaskTel Tankard men’s provincial championship are both to be staged in Melville.
The events are to be played at the Horizon Credit Union Centre.
It’s the first time the provincial curling body has staged overlapping championships in the same city. The nine-team Scotties is set for Jan. 24-30, with the 16-team men’s event scheduled for Jan. 29 to Feb. 2.
“We know a lot of hard work goes into planning a successful championship and based on the success of the 2017 Viterra Scotties and 2015 SaskTel Tankard (both of which were held in the city), we look forward to watching Melville welcome the best curlers in the province,” CurlSask executive director Ashley Howard said in a media release.
The winner of the provincial women’s tournament is to represent Saskatchewan in the 2020 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The Canadian championship tournament is set for Feb. 14-23 at Moose Jaw’s Mosaic Place.
The provincial men’s champion will wear Saskatchewan’s colours in the Tim Hortons Brier. The national men’s championship event is to take place Feb. 29 to March 8 in Kingston, Ont.
