Mother’s Day is right around the corner.
Many moms will enjoy breakfast in bed or maybe have brunch out on Sunday. Others will be spoiled with jewelry or other gifts.
But flowers and plants are an easy get to let Mom know you care and Rick Van Duyvendyk knows the most popular choice to make.
“The hanging basket is large and they show lots of colours and lots of flowers which will put a smile on every mom’s face,” Van Duyvendyk said.
And while a hanging basket may be popular, Van Duyvendyk is encouraging people to think outside the box when it comes to Mother’s Day.
“If you want to wow Mom a little more, then maybe consider a succulent arrangement. They are easy to take care of (and) you can put them in any place you want. Whether your mother has a yard or not, you can put a succulent inside the house and have an arrangement you can enjoy that’s easy to care for. It’s all the rage right now,” Van Duyvendyk explained.
“Now, if Mom does have an outdoor garden and they love roses, put a hardy rose in, something like a campfire rose or Canadian shield. Campfire has all the colours of the campfire in it — the yellows, whites and reds — (and) the Canadian shield is a beautiful red rose. Both of them are hardy and come up every year and are great for the garden.”
As for the May long weekend on the horizon, Van Duyvendyk advises to hold off on some of the work around the garden.
“You can start putting your peas in or your potatoes in that are below the ground surface, but if you are going to plant a bedding plant out there, you need to pick it up from your local garden centre and hard it off for three or four days,” he said. “That means putting it outside during the day and bring it in at night because some of the nights are still getting in around minus-one, minus-two, so you want to harden it off so it doesn’t go from being right in a lush greenhouse to a minus night.”
