Let’s hear it for the little guy.
In Prince Albert (population under 40,000), the celebrations are on following the Raiders’ WHL championship victory over the Vancouver Giants.
Last year at this time, hockey fans in Swift Current (population under 20,000) were partying after the Broncos laid claim to the Ed Chynoweth Cup. In a league where there are bigger centres, owners with deeper pockets and some affiliations with NHL clubs, the community-owned Raiders and Broncos have found a way to cut through.
The sacrifices aren’t lost on those in the spotlight, either. Following Monday’s Game 7 win over the Giants, Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid was quick to thank his front office. It’s a small number of workers who went to great lengths to just make it work. That included setting up milk crates for fans to stand on so they could see over the heads of other fans as the team went on this magical run in a 2,500-seat arena.
The road to success can be a little unconventional in small centres, but totally worth it when the journey is complete.
