You’re probably thinking about firing up the grill this long weekend.
The City of Regina just wants you to remember not to leave it unattended, as careless cooking is the leading cause of fire, with an average of three homes going up in smoke every year because of it.
It only takes a moment for flames to ignite a house, especially if it’s built with vinyl siding, said Fire Marshal Randy Ryba.
For firepits, make sure to use approved fuels, and to keep a screen over the flames. Remember that it’s not for incinerating your garbage and make sure there’s water nearby.
They should also be kept at least 30 metres away from any structure on the property.
“We have ignition of decks, fences … and structures as well. So we’re looking for people not only to enjoy their pit but enjoy it safely,” Ryba said.
Be considerate, too. Ryba said fires can be ordered out if smoke causes “unreasonable distress” for neighbours.
The city is also asking people to help protect its trees by not bringing in firewood from elsewhere. This is to prevent the spread of diseases like Dutch Elm.
Russell Eirich, manager of forestry, pest control and horticulture, said diseases and pests like the emerald ash borer can wipe out 45 per cent of the city’s trees.
