John Daly can’t walk 18 holes, let alone 72, because of osteoarthritis.
This week, the PGA has given him special status to use a golf cart to get around Bethpage Black for the second major of the season.
Daly also says his diabetes is a concern as well.
Tiger Woods threw some shade toward Daly, citing Woods winning the U.S. Open while hobbling around on a broken leg.
Here’s the question: Is the ability to walk the full 18 part of the game? Or should more players with a knee or ankle issue be able to get carted around?
Nick Faldo says he believes walking the full 18 is integral to professional golf.
Does it give an unfair advantage? Certainly it does. You go for a four-hour walk up and down hilly terrain. Then do it for three more days and see how you feel going into the final holes of a major.
Then watch someone do that same course on a cart. Yeah, his back and knees will feel a bit less stiff by Sunday.
While Daly’s game isn’t good enough to win, if he’s not well enough to do it the right way, then sorry, you can’t play.
