“It’s not reviewable” is not a good enough answer.
The NHL is on the defensive following a blown call in Game 3 of the NHL Western Conference final on Wednesday night. A puck that was gloved ahead from one San Jose player to another was shot into the St. Louis net seconds later, giving the Sharks a Game 3 overtime victory. Referees Marc Joanette and Dan O’Rourke missed Timo Meier’s glove pass to a teammate which led to the game-winning goal.
Pressure for professional leagues to “get it right” in the last two decades has led to video review in every sport, yet for some reason, not here. Earlier in the playoffs, Colorado had a goal taken away because of a video review that showed a player offside at the opposite side of the ice from where the puck was. On Wednesday, a glove pass was overlooked, and an overtime goal counted because such a play isn’t reviewable?
The NHL needs to go back to the drawing board on this one.
