Speeding and aggressive driving remain problems on Saskatchewan’s roads.
According to a media release issued Friday by SGI, police officers in the province handed out 8,081 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving in April — and that number didn’t include tickets issued via photo radar.
SGI said the speeding offences included 433 instances when a driver exceeded the speed limit in a school zone, 341 occasions on which a driver exceeded 60 kilometres per hour while passing a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights flashing, 247 times when a motorist exceeded the speed limit by more than 35 km/h, and 46 instances when a driver exceeded the speed limit by more than 50 km/h.
The April spotlight didn’t shine only on speeders and aggressive drivers.
SGI noted that there also were 744 distracted driving offences (including 634 for cellphone use while behind the wheel), 281 impaired driving offences (including 258 Criminal Code charges), and 553 violations regarding seatbelts or child car seats.
The May Traffic Safety Spotlight has been focusing on impaired driving.
