Why is it we only see change after a tragedy or near-tragedy? I guess that’s why there is a phrase known as a “wakeup call.”
Major League Baseball officials should have had theirs last year when a 78-year-old woman was struck by a foul ball and later died.
This week we saw a four-year-old taken to hospital in a rush after a foul ball, like a bullet from a gun, was lined into the first couple of rows.
Word is she’ll be OK, but it begs the question why baseball hasn’t taken better care of fans with more and more injuries.
Players want more netting. And you’ll know why when you see the reaction and tears from Albert Almora, the player who hit the ball into the stands the other night.
And don’t get me started on it getting in the way of the view. Where did we all sit at small-town ball tournaments? Behind cages far thicker than the nylon mesh they use now.
I’d say make the change before someone dies, but that has already happened — and sadly not much has changed.
