Things are starting to happen in the Capital Pointe hole.
On Sunday, the City of Regina closed Victoria Avenue to westbound traffic between McIntyre and Albert streets so that workers could begin preparing the former Capital Pointe site for future work.
The city has hired a company to fill in the hole at the corner of Albert and Victoria, where the Capital Pointe condominium project was to stand.
“The contractor started to prepare the site for upcoming work,” the City of Regina said Monday in a statement. “This includes the removal of the pedestrian corridor, installation of jersey barriers and fencing, and mobilization of equipment.
“The contractor is currently developing a work plan and we anticipate commencement of material hauling in the coming weeks. The City will notify the public a week before hauling work commences.”
On Monday, a few workmen could be seen in the hole with surveying equipment. It appeared that some dirt also had been dumped into the excavation in order to build a small ramp.
In a release issued Friday, the city said the sidewalks on the north side of Victoria and the east side of Albert will remain closed until the project is completed in October.
The city took control of the hole in April, ending months of back and forth with the developer. The actions that started Sunday are the city’s latest steps toward its goal of filling the hole.
