Rory McIlroy marked his golf ball with a loonie during the Canadian Open, shot a final round of 61 and won by seven shots. He quaffed a beer in celebration, praised the crowd, vowed to return to defend his title and donned a Toronto Raptors jersey before declaring “Raptors in five!”
Are we sure he’s from Northern Ireland?
The only Canadian thing he didn’t do was pick a winner for Game 7 of the Stanley Cup, slated for Wednesday between the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues. Oh, and he didn’t discuss the final rosters announced during the weekend by the CFL’s nine teams. And one more thing, he didn’t handicap Christine Sinclair and the Canadian women’s soccer team’s chances as it was about to start its World Cup schedule.
The Canadian Open got an earlier, better date from the PGA this season, one week before the U.S. Open. And it’s a pity McIlroy’s 22-under-par performance didn’t get more attention on a busy sports weekend. He’s one of only seven golfers to win the Canadian, British and U.S. opens, the world’s three oldest golf tournaments, and he’s one of the most honest, refreshing athletes on the planet. He should be a Canadian!
