It was a great “road game.” That’s the best way to describe the Boston Bruins’ convincing 5-1 win over the Blues in St. Louis in Sunday’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final.
Every goaltender plays better with the lead. Tuukka Rask had that luxury after Brad Marchand scored 8:40 into the opening period. Boston received two obvious boosts in this game. Goaltending and production from the depth in the lineup gave the visitors a real lift. I’m not sure anyone would have picked Brandon Carlo to score the game-winning goal in Game 6, but the third-year Bruin scored his second goal of these playoffs in the third period.
It was Rask who pointed out the not-so-obvious benefit of a terrific penalty kill. St. Louis is 0-for-8 on the power play in the last three games of this series, and has gone nearly 195 minutes of hockey without scoring a goal on the man advantage. The bruising Bruins have done a nice job on special teams, so much so that it may help them win another Stanley Cup this week.
