I still can’t believe that the St. Louis Blues were able to take a 2-0 first-period lead in their 4-1 win over the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final Wednesday.
In the first 20 minutes, Blues star Colton Parayko gave a puck away in open ice in the St. Louis zone and took a delay-of-game penalty. St. Louis went 16 minutes 11 seconds without getting a shot on goal, had just four shots on the Boston net in the opening frame, and yet somehow took a two-goal advantage to the dressing room. Had it not been for goaltender Jordan Binnington, the Blues would have been finished.
It was a game that defies logic, but when one thinks about it, so did the season. The Blues were in last place in the overall standings in January, fired their head coach and came close to selling off talent to build for the future. Yet here they are, as Stanley Cup champions, on the heels of a game that was indicative of a season.
