Construction is well underway on a new wastewater treatment facility in Lumsden.
On Tuesday, the town hosted a ceremony to mark the occasion. The federal and provincial governments each invested more than $6.7 million in the $20.3-million project, with the municipal government responsible for the rest.
“On behalf of the Town of Lumsden, its residents and their council, it’s truly wonderful to celebrate this milestone, as construction moves forward on this new wastewater treatment plant, which will allow our local utility to maintain environmentally responsible standards and support our community’s growth well into the future,” Mayor Bryan Matheson said in a media release.
The town currently uses a sewage lagoon system that can’t be expanded to keep up with the town’s population growth. The new wastewater facility will be able to do that and, according to the town’s release, the plant will “help better protect the environment.”
Ground was broken on the project in the spring. The facility is expected to be up and running by late 2020.
