The Toronto Raptors have greatly altered Saskatchewan’s approach to basketball.
There are pockets of this country that have seen a spike in participation during the team’s run to the NBA title. A championship, a quarter of a century in the making, has led to many young people dribbling a basketball for the first time.
The priority of the Western Canadian sports fan has changed. Let’s be honest. When was the last time anyone in Saskatchewan cared about NBA free agency? This year, sports enthusiasts from this province, and beyond, will be circling June 30 on the calendar and watching every move made by Kawhi Leonard. It’s an off-season landmark date that may surpass the NHL’s free-agency period in interest.
That interest in these parts will only last as long as Toronto’s NBA franchise contends for a title. However, now that the Raptors have won, it may make it easier to win again.
Here, the Riders rule, but make room for the Raptors.
