Ten days ago it would have been easy to think the Saskatchewan Roughriders would defeat the hometown Ottawa Redblacks in tonight’s CFL game.
The Redblacks were supposed to be a mess after an off-season that saw them lose many of their star players to free agency, including quarterback Trevor Harris, tailback William Powell and slotback Greg Ellingson. Powell showed up in Saskatchewan, where the Roughriders had re-signed quarterback Zach Collaros and appeared to bolster their roster to at least be better than Ottawa.
Then the season started.
Saskatchewan lost its road opener to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats after also losing Collaros to a headshot. The Redblacks went into Calgary, home of the Grey Cup champions, a place they rarely win, and defeated the Stampeders, despite Ottawa quarterback Dominique Davis throwing four interceptions. Davis subsequently led the Redblacks on a game-winning touchdown drive.
Ottawa’s quarterback situation seems settled, with a team that should have confidence in its starter. Meanwhile, the Roughriders have decided Cody Fajardo will be the starting quarterback, but rookie Isaac Harker will also play.
The more unsettled team usually loses. That’s the Roughriders.
