Saskatchewan Roughriders fans can be happy about their team’s offence, maybe even optimistic about new starting quarterback Cody Fajardo.
Their defence and special teams? Not so much!
The Roughriders offence was downright explosive during a 44-41 loss Thursday against the hometown Ottawa Redblacks. Making his first CFL start, Fajardo threw for 360 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. It’s a drastic change from last season’s pop-gun attack. But the biggest surprise came from the defence and special teams, which uncharacteristically let down the Roughriders.
Shoddy tackling and leaky pass coverage cost them. And here’s the biggest surprise: The Roughriders didn’t create a single turnover. The team that thrived last year on turnovers didn’t force a fumble, intercept a pass or stop a third-down gamble. In two games the Roughriders have given away six turnovers and not created one, which is the simplest explanation for why they’re 0-2 to start the season.
