I can’t wait for July 6 to arrive.
Each summer for the last seven years, the induction ceremony for the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame has taken place. The province’s contribution to the sport is almost a given for us who live here, yet remarkable when given further thought.
Seven-time world champion and four-time gold medallist Hayley Wickenheiser from Shaunavon is among the 2019 inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The Hockey Hall of Fame opened in 1961. Howe, Federko, Trottier, Bower and now Wickenheiser are among the Saskatchewanians who have their rightful place in the Hall. North Battleford’s Emile Francis, a 1982 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, contributed to the game in many ways.
It’s hard to believe that the beautiful Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame in Swift Current didn’t open until 2012. At least it exists. We can now celebrate what many across the country and the globe have celebrated for a long time — our province’s world-wide contribution to the sport of hockey.
