The Calgary Stampeders made more off-season changes than the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Yet the Stampeders looked like an efficient, experienced squad on offence and defence while drubbing the Roughriders 37-10 before a less-than-sold-out crowd Saturday at Mosaic Stadium. Quarterback Nick Arbuckle, making his first CFL start in the absence of injured league MVP Bo Levi Mitchell, showed a veteran’s presence while finding his receivers. It helped that Calgary ran the football effectively, benefited even more by Saskatchewan’s sloppy tackling.
The post-game discussion focused on the Roughriders being flat, the problems of quarterback Cody Fajardo in his third CFL start and the revised look of the team’s mascot, Gainer the Gopher. The Roughriders produced a video skit showing Gainer throwing away his green contact lenses, which explains why his eyes are now black and no longer snake-like. That preceded the arrival of Tyler Bozak, Brayden Schenn and Jaden Schwartz, the three Saskatchewanians who recently helped the St. Louis Blues win the Stanley Cup. They also brought along the cup.
It was Saskatchewan’s lone highlight.
