The Toronto Sun’s Steve Simmons caused quite a stir on the weekend with something he wrote.
“One thing that hasn’t been confirmed for the next season of Hockey Night In Canada: The return of Don Cherry and Coach’s Corner,” Simmons wrote. “Rogers is cutting all over the place, which included the removal of Bob McCown on radio and television and Doug MacLean doing the same.”
That led to speculation that Cherry wouldn’t be back. Social media was buzzing until the 85-year-old Cherry did confirm that he would be back for the 2019-20 season.
Simmons’ article does point to a larger issue for Sportsnet. Rogers pays more than $400 million per season for NHL rights.
Cherry may be staying for less than he has been getting paid in the past. The same could apply to many other on-air personalities at Rogers, as the company tries to figure out how to ensure a $5.2-billion, 13-year contract with the NHL doesn’t break the bank.
