CFL schedule-makers are notoriously bad, but they’re about to hit a midseason jackpot with the upcoming home-and-home series they have slotted between the B.C. Lions and Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Roughriders and Lions have each won only once so far this season. They’re tied for fourth in the West. Or, if you prefer, tied for last behind the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 3-1 Edmonton Eskimos and 2-2 Calgary Stampeders. With Hamilton, Ottawa and, surprisingly, Montreal vying for three playoff berths in the East, there’s a shrinking likelihood of a fourth, wild-card team from the West earning a wild-card spot in the postseason.
This back-to-back set can radically affect the fate of the Lions or Roughriders, particularly if either team loses both games. The series starts Saturday in Saskatchewan and concludes one week later in B.C. They meet a third time this season, too, in mid-October, when the standings could be far more settled.
The Roughriders are trying to find their footing behind Cody Fajardo, who is making his fourth CFL start as a quarterback, while the Lions have been unable to protect their quarterback, Mike Reilly, the league’s highest-paid player, and they’re paying the price.
Sure it’s early, but Saturday’s winner grabs an early advantage.
